Adventures in Relationships is not so much a program as a lifestyle. It is about the very exciting adventure of inviting the living Lord Jesus to be part of our every day life. We become His hands and feet in helping to meet the spiritual, emotional and practical needs of the people that He leads us to in our community. We view people as Jesus sees them.
Not as people to “zap” but as fellow human beings with needs, joys and hopes that we can identify with. Jesus saw the potential of people like Zaccheus, the head tax collector in Jericho. In the same way He knows what a beautiful godly Christian, the cursing drunk at the local pub can become, through the power of the cross and the resurrection.
So Adventures in Relationships is designed to help Christians living in a church culture to learn how to fulfil the great commission to, "Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). We very much want to do our part to fulfil the great commission but we don’t know how to do it.
There are two reasons why we may feel helpless. The first one is that only the Lord, through the power of the Holy Spirit, can teach us how to reach people with the gospel. Only He can enable us. We can’t do it ourselves. So we need to allow the Lord to work through us in the encounters we have with people every day. We need to start the day making every part of us available to Him. This is why individual and corporate prayer plays a vital part in Adventures in Relationships. We are asking the Lord to lead us to the people He wants us to build relationships with.
The second reason for our helplessness is that many of us spend most of our time in church related activities. What happens after a number of years, is that we develop a church culture, (language, thinking, clothing, art, music, lifestyle, etc.). This can result in us losing our ability to communicate with people in the community because of the subtle cultural differences. Missionaries spend much time immersing themselves in a new culture before they can effectively communicate the gospel. We need to become intentional about making the time
to come to grips with an ever changing culture so we can communicate the gospel more effectively. Our compassion for
those who don’t know the Lord, will drive us to bridge the gap,"For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died." (2 Corinthians 5:14, NIV). "To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22, ESV).
Adventures in Relationships is designed to help church people bridge the cultural gap and build relationships with people in the
community so that you can build a platform of mutual respect that will help you to share the wonderful good news of Jesus in a natural way. This is a step by step process and it takes time. We need to learn to do that without compromising our relationship with the Lord. We don’t however, want to limit the Lord in any way by saying that the Holy Spirit can’t lead us to someone who we can immediately lead to the Lord. We always need to be ready (1 Peter 3:15) for that to happen. The danger is thinking that it must always happen instantly. We may be tempted to think that we don’t need to work hard cultivating relationships and sowing. Adventures in Relationships works on the philosophy that if we have done the hard work of building a relationship of trust and mutual respect, then witnessing will become easier and more natural.
It also works on the basis that people listen less to information because there’s so much of it and they need to see Christians living the life in front of them. There is corporate aspect to this because the more the church can be seen operating in the community as a united body exhibiting the life of Christ, the more credible the message becomes to the unbeliever.
Adventures in Relationships is also about being intentional which means allocating regular and quality time to spend with people outside of the church culture. This might mean making difficult decisions about some church orientated activities that the believer may need to give up. The intentional part is encouraged by members of a group who become accountable to one another. The group also plays a vital role in praying specifically for the opportunities each member has. Every one of the twelve sessions includes a skill to develop, an intentional activity to work on, and a share and prayer time. This doesn’t mean that the skill or the activity will be perfected after each session. It means that a skill or activity is highlighted each session so that the time between each session can be used to work on just that skill or activity. Hopefully, after that they will continue to be used and perfected in the future.
Each session, whether it happens weekly, fortnightly or whether it spans over a period of time, includes a relevant Bible study which doesn’t have to be used if Adventures in Relationships is used as part of an existing Bible study group. Members of the group can use the included Bible study at home instead.
Adventures in Relationships can be used by groups of different sizes and is adaptable to different situations. It can be used by a family or married couple or a group of friends meeting regularly for coffee. It is also suitable for individuals to use. However using the course, as individuals, has its limitations because there is no accountability or group specific prayer which is so vital in its effectiveness. If people are separated by distance, Adventures in Relationships can be used by phone hook ups, or skype or WhatsApp calls, etc. This eliminates geographic limitations. During the running of Adventures in Relationship, we like to reinforce it all by conducting training programs at different intervals.
